segregates the two sister chromatids of each chromosome into separate daughter cells.
The resulting cells are either gametes or cells that give rise to gametophytes via mitosis. Note that early during meiosis (during Prophase I) there is an exchange of DNA between the two members of each sister chromatid pair ("crossing-over").
