Researchers on Santiago Island view the area where a megatsunami apparently hit 73,000 years ago. On a clear day, from these cliffs on the north side of the island, it is possible to see a silhouette of Fogo, nearly 40 miles away. The geologists on this ridge believe that a tsunami generated by Fogo's sudden collapse was about 800 feet high and swept over the spot where they are standing. Santiago is part of the Cape Verde group off the west coast of Africa.
